Tidbits: Alex Ferguson claims Newcastle roots caused Steve Bruce's demise

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Sunderland fans lost faith with Steve Bruce partly because of his Newcastle roots (according to BBC Sport).

If I recall, Steve Bruce was a celebrated signing when he dumped small town Wigan to take the Sunderland job. Unlike Roberto Martinez, the current Wigan boss who resisted moving to a bigger club at the start of the season, Bruce was only too happy to run from the Rugby town when they came calling 3 seasons ago.

I don't recall the fans making a fuss about Bruce and his band of Manchester United rejects, retirees and trainees when he entered town. I also doubt it took them almost three years to realize he was a Geordie before raining chants on him.

For the records, Bruce's winning record at Sunderland was a dismal 29.5% (played 98, won 29, Drawn 28, Lost 41). Did SAF consider that perhaps dumping his washed out players and trainees at Sunderland had something to do with Bruce's less than mediocre results?

Sir Alex needs to take his meds.
